ABSTRACT

Background@#The Baumann skin type (BST) classification provides a new approach for clinical care of dermatologic patients. @*Objective@#To investigate the correlation of skin types with genetic factors and environmental factors that have an important influence on Korean skin by comparing and analyzing the correlation between phenotype and genotype. @*Methods@#From July to October 2016, 774 adults who visited the one online shopping mall were subjected to skin BST questionnaire and gene single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) tests. Oral epithelial cells of the subjects were collected using a Genoplan DNA analysis kit, and 14 genes were analyzed by a genetic analysis agency (Genoplan Inc., Fukuoka, Japan). @*Results@#The most abundant skin type was OSNT (oily, sensitive, non-pigmented, tight) observed in 205 participants (26.5%). Of the filaggrin (FLG) SNPs, 143 participants (18.5%) had the GG (good) SNP; 391 (50.5%), GA (normal) SNP; and 240 (31.0%), AA (poor) SNP. Among those whose FLG SNP was GG (good), 121 (84.6%) were sensitive and 22 (15.4%) were resistant. Of those whose filaggrin (FLG) SNP was GA (normal), 337 (86.2%) were sensitive and 54 (13.8%) were resistant. Of those whose FLG SNP was AA (poor), 213 (88.8%) were sensitive and 27 (11.3%) were resistant. There was also a statistically significant difference in the fruit-vegetable consumption and use of a sunbathing bed between sensitive and resistant type in the groups that classified the FLG SNP as GA. @*Conclusion@#This is the first study to investigate the association of BST with genetic factors and environmental factors.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Research into the Baumann skin type (BST) has recently expanded, with growing interest in the development of an efficient and effective skin type classification system for better understanding of this skin condition. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to identify male-specific skin type characteristics with investigation into the distribution of BST by age and region in the Korean male population and to determine the intrinsic and extrinsic factors related to skin type. METHODS: A questionnaire was administered to collect information about age, region, working behavior, drinking behavior, smoking behavior, usual habit of sun protection, medical history, and the BST which consisted of four parameters; oily (O) or dry (D), sensitive (S) or resistant (R), pigmented (P) or non-pigmented (N), and wrinkled (W) or tight (T). RESULTS: We surveyed 1,000 Korean males aged between 20 and 60 years who were divided equally by age and region. Of the total respondents, OSNW type accounted for the largest percentage and ORPW type the lowest. In terms of Baumann parameters, O type was 53.5%, S type was 56.1%, N type was 84.4% and W type was 57.5%. Several behavioral factors were found to have various relationships with the skin type. CONCLUSION: The predominant skin type in the Korean male respondents was OSNW type, and the distribution of skin types with regards to age and region was reported to be distinct. Therefore, skin care should be customized based on detailed skin types considering the various environmental factors.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: We aimed to introduce a new surgical method (Palatal Muscle Resection, PMR) for the treatment of snoring patients. This study contained the surgical technique of PMR and the objective and subjective outcomes of PMR. SUBJECTS AND METHOD: Twenty-one patients with snoring were examined (19 male, 2 female) in a prospective manner. Questionnaires based on the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) were completed by patients and their respective bed partners before and after PMR. Five patients who underwent PMR have completed pre and post operative (after 4 weeks) polysomnographic (PSG) studies. Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) was analyzed 1, 2, 3, and 7 days after the surgery. Statistical analysis was performed using the Wilcoxon signed rank test. RESULTS: Subjective questionnaires showed statistically significant improvements (ESS; from 10.7 to 6.7). The VAS was decreased from 4.3 in 1 dayto 2 in 7 days. CONCLUSION: The PMR is a simple and painless office-based method to treat snoring. Long term follow up studies with more patients would be required.

ABSTRACT

Sebaceous carcinoma is a rare malignant appendageal tumor of the skin and is usually located on the meibomian glands if the eyelid. We present a case of sebaceous carcinoma developed in a scapulir area. A 77-year old male had been suffering from a 3x2.5 cm sized ulcerated mass with an indurated margin an the left scapular area for 10 years. Histopathologirally, irregular, lobular formations were composed of sebaceous and undifferentiated cells showing considerable variation in the shape and size of their nuclei. We removed the lesion by surgical excision and could not find any recurrence for 30 months.
